On 31st October 2021 two trains collided at Tunnel Junction east of Salisbury. During the incident Ian Capewell and Gunnar Lindahl were the “Gold” strategic leads for RAIB and Network Rail respectively.
Ian and Gunnar will share their experiences of the subsequent response and recovery. This talk will cover how investigation techniques have changed over the previous 20 years up to the Salisbury accident investigation and how the collision and subsequent recovery operation have influenced industry thinking.
Why this is important for Railway Operators
Major train accidents are rare and the industry (thankfully) gets few opportunities to practice our response to real events like this. This session should offer a useful insight to operators on how different agencies faced challenges and worked together after the derailment in October 2021 and will also give a glimpse into the work of the RAIB in the weeks and months that followed.
Key Takeaways
• Understanding how RAIB investigate accidents working with the other stakeholders and rail industry and how this has evolved over the last two decades
• The specific challenges presented by the Salisbury collision in October 2021 in terms of response and recovery and how the industry responded to them.
