The Passenger Transport Operations Manager apprenticeship is aimed at people wanting to become effective operations managers by gaining a broader understanding of rail operations and the whole rail system in order to provide a high quality, accessible, safe and modern transport service. Ideal for people eager to lead and make an impact in the rail industry.

You will develop the skills necessary to become an effective operations manager. Throughout the 14-month course, you will gain a detailed understanding of the rail system and its operations, including key areas such as targets and obligations, infrastructure, and assets.

The programme also emphasises leadership and people management, equipping you with the ability to make informed decisions by understanding the complex relationships within the rail sector.

This comprehensive training will provide you with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to become a confident and decisive operations manager, fully prepared for succession within the rail industry.

Requirements for study:

  • A minimum of 6 hours per week spent in off-the job training
  • Apprentices aged 18 at the start of their apprenticeship, who do not yet have Maths and English qualifications at GCSE equivalent, will be required to undertake additional learning to complete Functional Skills Level 2.
  • Apprentices aged 19+ at the start of their apprenticeship who do not yet have Maths and English qualifications at GCSE equivalent, will have the option to undertake additional learning to complete Functional Skills Level 2.

How this level 4 apprenticeship works:

  • The programme is over 14 months plus 4 months for End Point Assessment (EPA).
  • Attendance at 12 face-to-face teaching days for apprenticeship standard content, including rail expert led Certificate in Railway Operations Management modules.
  • Regular progress reviews with CIRO coach and line manager for support and to guide development opportunities.
  • The apprenticeship standard includes a focus on skills and competences around four themes: Safety, Quality, Customer Service and Management.
  • Access to online learning resources.
  • Access to webinars for further learning and management behaviours development.
  • OneFile portfolio development.
  • Access to CIRO Rail Academy Introduction to Rail online course.
  • Access to CMI Management Direct management resource portal.
  • End Point Assessment, carried out by an independent end point assessment organisation, includes delivery of a work-based project and completing a professional review (discussion) underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.
