Ian Capewell

Ian is a qualified diesel engineer having started his career at BREL in Crewe, Cheshire. Having left BREL in 1987 working for two police forces and RAIB Ian is an investigator with over 36 years’ experience in dealing and managing investigations criminal and railway safety related events.

Ian is now recognised as a world leading expert in dealing with site management and investigations into major railway related accidents having managed at operational ,tactical and strategic levels during the rail accidents at Paddington, Potters bar, Hatfield, Great heck, Tebay, Grayrigg, Croydon tram accident, Carmont, Llangennech and Salisbury . He has been the dedicated lead on investigation training within the UK Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) since 2004 and was appointed as a Principal Inspector in 2022. Ian has worked both in the UK, Europe and UAE assisting other Government Transport Authorities in investigative training and providing advice on the management of railway accident investigations.

Ian has for the last 20 years been a visiting fellow on the forensic and fundamental and advanced accident investigation PhD, MSc and BSc degree course at Derby and Cranfield Universities. He has three grown up daughters and in his spare time (when he gets some) he sketches and paints and enjoys walking with his wife and two Frenchie’s.

 

Gunnar Lindahl

Gunnar started his career at London Underground as a graduate trainee, working in various frontline roles including as a signaller and controller, primarily on the Central line.

Since joining Network Rail in 2017, he worked in various operational leadership roles across the South East, before joining the Wessex Route in 2020. Gunnar was most recently Operations Director for the Wessex Route, before joining Arriva Rail London (which operates the London Overground) in August 2023 as their Operations Director.

In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities, Gunnar has led the strategic response for Network Rail to a number of major incidents and threats across the mainline rail network. He was the Gold Commander for Network Rail Southern’s response to the 10-month industrial dispute with the RMT in 2022, and notably led Network Rail’s response and recovery to the Salisbury derailment in October 2021.
