What is the Professional Operators Development (POD) framework?

Designed to enhance the skills and capabilities of the modern railway workforce, the Professional Operators Development (POD) framework is the CIRO recognised skills pathway for railway operators. The POD self-assessment can be completed in two different formats:

  1. Using the self-assessment tool on the CIRO Members’ Portal. Completed assessments are then kept over time and you can continue to monitor your development.
  2. By downloading the online POD brochure.

Once you’ve completed the self-assessment for the POD framework, you can move on to the Continuing Professional Development process to continue your progression and learning within the railway industry.

Areas covered by the POD framework

The POD framework is a structured approach designed to develop and enhance the skills, knowledge and competencies of rail professionals, particularly those in operational roles. It focuses on three core areas:

  1. Professional development: This area emphasises the growth of technical and industry-specific skills. It ensures that professionals stay up to date with the latest knowledge, safety guidelines and technology.
  2. Operational excellence: The framework places a strong emphasis on improving operational efficiency and effectiveness. This includes process optimisation, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  3. Leadership and soft skills: Beyond technical expertise, the POD framework also focuses on developing leadership qualities, communication skills, teamwork and emotional intelligence. These skills are critical for professionals who aspire to take on leadership roles or work collaboratively in diverse teams.
