Juggling a demanding career with further education can seem like a daunting challenge. But for Warren Fellows, Network Rail HR Business Partner, CIRO’s Diploma of Higher Education course has resulted in a sense of clarity and forward momentum, where “everything is now falling into place’’.
The work-based academic programme is suitable for individuals who hold a level four qualification or equivalent and is delivered in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University. Created and delivered by industry professionals, it equips participants with enhanced commercial awareness, reflective skills and a comprehensive understanding of the railway system as a whole.
Warren applied for the programme to expand his knowledge and expertise in the railway industry’s operational side. “I wanted to gain a better appreciation and understanding how the industry works, and I hoped the qualification would also help with any future career moves,” he explains.
He candidly admits the challenge of balancing a busy full-time job with academic demands. “It was harder than I expected,” he says. “However, the course is developed with that in mind, and there is loads of support available.” He highlights the significance of the personal tutors, and the support they provide.
A significant benefit for Warren was the direct impact on his day-to-day role as a HR Business Partner.
“I am surprised about how much knowledge I had picked up through meetings with my business areas (Wessex operations) as part of my day job. Turning that into a qualification will really help me with my career in Network Rail and has already opened some doors for me,” he shares.
His advice to prospective students is straightforward: “Be prepared to work and study hard for the qualification, make sure you give yourself study time and make full use of the brilliant support and resources available.”
CIRO’s Diploma in Railway Operations Management offers a unique opportunity for railway professionals to enhance their skills, contextualise their knowledge, and advance their careers.
