These Membership Terms and Conditions are the basis of the contract through which the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators (CIRO) will deliver a service to you and as a CIRO member.
1.1. Membership of the Chartered Institution is open to individuals and is personal to each CIRO member.
1.2. Applications for membership will be considered by the Chartered Institution who has the right to refuse applications.
1.3. The Chartered Institution has different levels of membership and the current levels of membership are detailed on the CIRO website.
1.4. Members agree to pay an annual subscription fee for every year of membership of the Institution. Membership fees vary depending on the level and type of membership. The current annual subscription fees are detailed on the CIRO website. Annual subscriptions can be paid in advance.
1.5. Your membership start date is specified as your date of your application to become a member of the Chartered Institution. However, your individual membership begins when your application has been reviewed, your membership fees have been paid and your welcome pack has been sent to you.
1.6. All information provided by you to us must be true and accurate at the point of applying. In the event of a change of circumstances such as moving jobs, change of contact details you must notify the Chartered Institution, by updating the information on your personal area on the CIRO website, by phone, email or in writing so that our records are up to date.
1.7. Membership is not transferable and non-refundable.
1.8. Members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and to treat each other with courtesy.
1.9. Members are expected to promote the objectives of the the Chartered Institution.
1.10. Membership is divided into two categories, Voting members and Non-voting members.
1.11. Voting members are the Fellows, Members and Associates, who have the right to attend and vote at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Voting members will be notified of the AGM and matters to be discussed in advance. The code of professional conduct will apply to all Voting members.
1.12. Non-voting members are the Affiliates.
1.13. All members agree to be bound by the CIRO Membership Terms and Conditions.
2.1. Membership benefits may vary according to the level of individual membership.
2.2. CIRO members receive a range of benefits which are detailed on the CIRO website.
2.3. The Chartered Institution reserves the right to change the benefits that apply to CIRO membership at any time without prior notice.
3.1. Members may apply to upgrade their membership at any time
3.2. Membership upgrade applications are to be submitted in accordance with the upgrade process detailed on the CIRO website.
3.3. Members agree to pay the membership upgrade administration fee which is payable when the upgrade has been awarded. The current annual subscription fees are detailed on the CIRO website.
4.1. Membership renewal occurs annually on 30th September and your personal membership record will indicate your membership renewal date.
4.2. As a member of the Chartered Institution, it is your responsibility to advise the Institution of your intention not to renew. Subscription payments not received within one month of becoming due will result in the membership being considered lapsed and all services may be suspended pending payment.
4.3. Lapsed membership may incur additional re-joining fees.
4.4. Membership charges will continue to accrue, until resignation is received in writing, subject to the cancellation procedure outlined in 4.5-4.7.
4.5. To cancel your membership, you will need to notify us in writing stating a reason which will be recorded for internal use only. Refunds will not be given for cancelled memberships.
4.6. Membership can only be cancelled after payment of all subscriptions, or any other sums of money due, including any subscription for the current year.
4.7. On cancellation of membership, all certificates of membership will expire and the use of the Chartered Institution post-nominal letters must cease.
5.1. CIRO reserves the right to withdraw membership or to prevent any member from renewing membership if the member puts the Institution into disrepute.
5.2. The CIRO reserves the right to withdraw membership if the member is deemed to have misused the membership privileges.
5.3. If a member is found to have contravened the CIRO Membership Terms and Conditions membership may be terminated by the Institution without prior warning.
5.4. Members will be subject to the disciplinary process enforced at the time.

As a result data protection has never been just about complying with the law, data protection has always been about keeping personal data safe and being fair in how it works with individuals and Chartered Institution will continue to operate this way in accordance with the CIRO Privacy Policy.

These terms and conditions may be revised from time to time. If they are revised, we will post or email the revised version to you. It will be your responsibility to keep up-to date with all such changes and your continued membership shall be deemed acceptance of any changes to these terms and conditions.
