The Level 6 Rail Operations Manager Apprenticeship is aimed at those working within the rail industry who are looking to move into senior operational management roles. This programme develops the strategic and technical skills required to manage and improve complex rail operations across passenger, freight, and infrastructure.

Requirements for study:

Off the job training hours to be confirmed

Apprentices aged 18 at the start of their apprenticeship, who do not yet have maths and/or English qualifications at GCSE (at grade C-A*/ 4-9), will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 2

Apprentices aged 19+ at the start of their apprenticeship, who do not yet have maths and/or English qualifications at GCSE (at grade C-A*/ 4-9), will have the option to complete Functional Skills Level 2

How the apprenticeship works:

The programme is typically 36 months, but CIRO offers a condensed 24-month programme, followed by 5 months for End Point Assessment (EPA)

Delivery includes regular online and in-person sessions covering apprenticeship standard content

Learners will undertake a work-based project, a professional discussion, and submit a portfolio of evidence as part of the EPA

Regular progress reviews with CIRO coach and line manager to guide development and offer tailored support

Access to online learning resources, including webinars and professional development tools

Portfolio development via OneFile

Access to CIRO Rail Master: A Whole System View of Rail short course

Access to CMI Management Direct resource portal

End Point Assessment

(Carried out by an independent EPA organisation)

A significant workplace project

Professional discussion

Submission of a portfolio of evidence

Course content includes:

Network operating principles and rail industry structure

Rail regulation and safety management systems

Timetable planning and service recovery

Risk management and performance monitoring

Stakeholder engagement and collaboration

Leadership and communication in multi-disciplinary teams

Human factors in operational decision-making

Planning, resource allocation, and continuous improvement

Developing a safety-first, accountable management culture

Achievements:

Level 6 Rail Operations Manager Apprenticeship certificate from the Department of Education (DfE)

Progression route to Chartered Manager status with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)

CMI Level 7 Diploma in Management and Leadership on Completion

CIRO membership upgrade to Member upon completion
