CIRO Degree Supports Kirsty Mitchell’s Ascent at Network Rail

Starting a new leadership role demands a blend of experience and continuous learning. For 38 year old Kirsty Mitchell, the recent appointment to Head of Control at Network Rail coincided with her decision to pursue further education through CIRO’s established Degree programme. This strategic move is already proving instrumental in bolstering her expertise and confidence as her responsibilities expand.

Having progressed through the railway industry since the age of 19, Kirsty recognised the value of a structured, industry-specific educational path. “I had finished the level 5 apprenticeship and was about to start my new role as head of the department,” Kirsty explains. “It was important to me to continue my studies in level 6 to support my development and knowledge as my responsibilities grew. Unlike other programmes I’ve encountered that haven’t endured, the CIRO path is established, respected, and directly relevant to my field.”

The experience of balancing study with a demanding leadership position has been supported by a robust network. “I have had support from both Glasgow Caledonian University and CIRO during my programme, especially when I needed to take a study break,” Kirsty shares. “While being a part-time remote learner can feel overwhelming at times, the wealth of support and resources available is invaluable. In my experience, fellow students are an incredible source of encouragement and understanding.”

Kirsty enthusiastically offers her guidance to fellow rail professionals. “I would recommend this programme to a colleague who is serious about expanding their knowledge, achieving a higher level of education, and can commit the necessary time. I am genuinely proud to be on this journey with CIRO and of what I have accomplished so far.

“My advice would be: don’t delay! I wish I had embraced this programme earlier in my career, particularly as I moved into management.”

CIRO’s Bachelor of Science Degree is a two-year, work-based learning programme designed to equip professionals with current industry knowledge, provide opportunities for development beyond their current role, and cultivate comprehensive reflective skills.
