When Mat Simpson first started volunteering at Bodmin Railway Heritage Trust in June 2019, fresh from completing his GCSEs, it was simply a hobby driven by a passion for railways and a dream of working in the industry one day. Today, that same enthusiasm has led him to a key operational role as Operations Superintendent, to help oversee the day-to-day running of the railway.
Mat’s railway journey began as a volunteer, but his commitment quickly opened new opportunities.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he became increasingly involved with office administration and marketing activities at Bodmin Railway, which led to a part-time paid role within the Commercial Team. The experience gave him valuable insight into both the world of work and the heritage railway sector.
In 2022, Mat transferred to the Operations Department, where he continued developing his skills and knowledge before progressing into his current role.
“As Operations Superintendent, I’m responsible for the day-to-day running of the operational railway at Bodmin Railway,” says Mat. “It’s a varied role, ranging from competence administration and rostering through to gala and event planning, as well as operational duties such as guarding, signalling and diesel driving.”
Recently, Mat upgraded his CIRO membership from Affiliate to Associate, a step that aligned with his ambitions for further professional development.
While he enjoys his current role, he is keen to gain broader operational experience across both the heritage and mainline railway sectors. For Mat, upgrading his membership provided access to valuable development opportunities while recognising the skills and experience he has already gained.
“The networking available has been incredibly valuable since upgrading my membership,” he explains. “I’ve been able to make new connections that were previously unavailable to me, which may lead to future training and job opportunities.”
Although CIRO offers a wide range of resources, events and development opportunities, it is the networking aspect that has had the greatest impact on Mat’s professional growth. “CIRO has such a range of events and resources at its disposal, but the networking opportunities, both formal and informal, have been the most valuable so far.”
For Mat, some of the best learning opportunities come from engaging with experienced industry professionals. “I’ve always found the best way to learn on the railways is through talking to experienced professionals and absorbing the wealth of knowledge they have to give.”
These conversations, insights and connections continue to shape his development and broaden his understanding of the industry.
For members considering upgrading their membership but are unsure whether it’s the right time, Mat’s advice is simple.
“What have you got to lose?”
Reflecting on his own experience, he highlights the support available throughout the process. “The Membership Team were brilliant at helping guide my application to ensure the best possible outcome for me, and the Professional Development tools available are great in confirming knowledge while also guiding you through areas where you could continue to learn and improve.”
He also believes the value of professional recognition should not be underestimated. “There’s so much to CIRO membership, and the professional recognition you gain, that you cannot underestimate it.”
Achieving Associate membership holds particular significance for Mat on both a personal and professional level.
“I come from a family of chartered professionals, so upgrading my membership and gaining the post-nominals ‘ACIRO’ has been a proud moment in my career.” Alongside the personal achievement, he values having his skills, experience and achievements recognised through an industry-accredited professional membership.
“I’m proud to have an industry-recognised accreditation and record of my achievements, skills and abilities.” The connections he has built since upgrading have also proved invaluable, providing opportunities to learn, share experiences and continue developing his career.
Mat remains passionate about operational railway roles and is focused on continuing to build his experience in the years ahead.
“I’ve always wanted to work in an operational railway role and would love to develop my career either in the heritage railway world or mainline environments.” What motivates him most is the opportunity to contribute to a safe, efficient railway while helping to create a positive experience for customers.
“I take great pride in knowing I’m part of a safe and efficient railway operation with many happy customers and would love to continue growing my career in this field.”
When asked what advice he would give to someone starting in railway operations, Mat’s answer is immediate:
“Absorb everything.” Whether it’s training, practical experience, or conversations with colleagues, he believes every opportunity presents a chance to learn. “Take every training opportunity offered and, if given the chance to sit with experienced professionals, talk and listen to them. They have great stories, you’ll always learn something from them, and you may make valuable connections that provide opportunities further down the line.”
Volunteering played a pivotal role in shaping Mat’s railway career and remains something he is passionate about today. Alongside his operations management responsibilities, Mat continues to undertake hands-on operational roles at Bodmin Railway as a Diesel Driver, Guard and Signalman, enjoying the variety that comes with no two days being the same.
“I would thoroughly encourage anyone interested in railways to get in touch with their local heritage railway. It was volunteering at Bodmin that got me into working on the railways and the very enjoyable career I now lead.”
Even outside work, railways remain an important part of Mat’s life. He enjoys maintaining a model railway at home and still occasionally volunteers at Bodmin Railway to help “keep his hand in” and enjoy the pride that comes from railway work.
Away from railways, Mat enjoys spending time with his fiancée and their two cats. “My fiancée and I have two cats, who are great listeners at the end of a tough day!”
