For Damien Trinh, a career in operations has always been driven by a passion for learning, development, and understanding the bigger picture.
Currently working as an Electrical Control Operator for Network Rail, Damien’s railway journey began as a Signaller at Stoke-on-Trent Signalling Centre on the West Coast South Route. Before joining the railway, however, he was pursuing a very different operational career path in aviation, training to become an Air Traffic Controller before the Covid pandemic changed those plans.
Since entering the rail industry, Damien has taken every opportunity to learn, grow and develop his operational expertise, leading him to achieve Associate membership and gain recognition for his commitment to continuous professional development.
The decision to upgrade was motivated by both personal ambition and professional development.
“It proves to my employer and the industry that I am serious about my career and development. It also allowed me to reflect on my current knowledge and how I might go about extending this.”
For Damien, the process was not simply about achieving a new membership grade. It was an opportunity to recognise the experience and expertise he had already gained, while identifying opportunities to continue growing professionally.
Throughout his development journey, CIRO has provided valuable support and resources.
From attending membership upgrade drop-in sessions to accessing learning materials that helped broaden his understanding of railway operations, Damien found that the Institution offered practical ways to build knowledge at his own pace.
“CIRO provides a lot to support my professional development. The drop-in sessions helped explain the upgrade process and the benefits of membership, while the resources available helped me fill gaps in my knowledge.”
This combination of guidance and self-directed learning gave him the confidence to progress successfully to Associate membership.
Many members are uncertain about whether they are ready to upgrade their membership. Damien’s advice is simple: you may already be closer than you think.
“You may already be eligible to upgrade, or close to it, through your current and previous work experience. The process can be very straightforward, with not much more required than writing down what you already know.”
A strong believer in continuous learning, Damien encourages those starting in railway operations to be curious and take an interest in the wider industry.
“Be open to learning more about the railway beyond the scope of your role. Doing this will improve your operational skills by helping you understand different processes and incidents across the network.”
This commitment to broadening his understanding of the railway is also central to Damien’s future ambitions. He hopes to continue learning about different areas of the industry and explore opportunities that will further develop his operational expertise and knowledge.
Professional recognition has become an important part of Damien’s career journey.
“Being a CIRO member is a great achievement for myself and proof to current and future employers of my experience, knowledge, and aspirations. It also provides me with a tangible goal and aims for a future upgrade.”
For Damien, Associate membership is both a significant achievement and a stepping stone towards future career ambitions within the railway industry.
Away from work, Damien enjoys making the most of the flexibility shift work can provide. Whether exploring the Peak District on long walks, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, or sharing his latest baking creations with colleagues, he values activities that help him recharge outside of work.
He is also currently revisiting a skill from his younger years by relearning the piano, a hobby he has enjoyed picking up again after a long break since his school days.
Damien’s story demonstrates that professional development is not always about taking on a new role or responsibility. Sometimes, it is about recognising the experience you have already built, reflecting on your achievements, and taking the next step to showcase your expertise to the wider industry.
