Lawrence Bowman, Managing Director of South Western Railway / Network Rail Wessex, will be reflecting on one year of operation since SWR ownership moved to DfT Operator.
In May 2025, SWR became the first operator to be nationalised following Royal Assent of the Public Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024. This Act made public ownership the default for railway operators, and has now seen four operators transition to ownership by DfTO. Nationalisation seeks to save industry costs from management fees, improve integration of track and train to simplify processes and better deliver for customers, improving reliability and increasing capacity.
