Open access rail has been a hotly debated topic in recent months, with companies like Lumo, Hull Trains, and Grand Central supplementing the services offered by public sector operators. Open access aims to fill gaps in the existing timetable, attract new customers with lower fares and provide exciting new routes. Key challenges include limited railway capacity on some parts of the network and general awareness of the open access offering, while benefits can include increased competition and lower fares for customers.
