A journey by rail between these cities is possible, but most people – over 95% – choose to drive instead. Why is that?
Passengers travelling between Coventry and Leicester currently have to change trains at Nuneaton, giving an end-to-end journey time of around or even slightly above an hour, despite the cities being just over 20 miles apart as the crow flies. With a direct rail service in place, Midlands Connect has evidence that this journey time could be reduced to 30 minutes, representing at least a halving of journey time. The new services would add around 4m seats to the network per annum, providing valuable new capacity in the corridor.
As well as helping cut journey times for passengers, the scheme provides major benefits to the railfreight industry, allowing more freight to be transferred onto the railways, most of which currently has to go by road because there isn’t space for it on the railway.
Of course, transport is the means and not the end, so there is a strong strategic rationale for seeking this investment, in part to drive the growth in high value city centre jobs in city centres.
Please join Andy Clark and Richard Mann, part of the rail planning team at Midlands Connect, to hear more about the business case submission that is planned and the technical work that has been completed to date.
The Midlands Area Council look forward to welcoming you to their event in which will give members the opportunity to meet area council members and network while enjoying light refreshments before the talk.
