The North East Area Council invites members to their Family Day at the Moorland Railway, which is located approximately 9 miles north of Scarborough, at Moorland House, just off the A171 at The Falcon Inn in Staintondale, YO13 0EW.
Attendees will need to make their own way to Moorland House for 11:00.
The owners, Lisa and Alan Williams (Alan is of “Modern Railways” fame), open their railway and gardens to the public throughout the summer to raise money for various charities. The Moorland Railway has balloon loops at each end of the line and passing loops in between, enabling non-stop running for over a mile. Situated on the North Yorkshire Moors, there are some challenging gradients and the highest point on the line at Stainton Summit is over 750ft above sea level, making it one of the highest (and windiest!) 7¼” gauge lines in the country. The extensive signalling system on the Moorland Railway probably differentiates the line from most other miniature railways, allowing up to five trains to be run at once at busy times. There are two signalboxes controlling both semaphore and colour light signals and points.
Admission to the railway is £10 (£2.50 for under 16s) and all rides are then free, as is an unlimited supply of tea and coffee. CIRO will pay the admission fee for any member who is attending. Please note this offer is available only to CIRO members (and not to friends and family).
Lisa’s excellent buffet, priced at £15.50 per head (under 16s free) will be served at lunch time and there is an additional option of a cream tea served in the early afternoon. The cream tea is £6.50 per head (under 16s will receive biscuits instead, again free). Please let Phil know if you have any dietary requirements.
Please note: All payments are to be made in cash on entry, as there are no card facilities at Moorland House. All profits from the food and admission fees are divided between Alan and Lisa’s chosen charities.
