In 2021 Iarnród Éireann / Irish Rail published its 2040 Railfreight strategy, mapping out how the Irish network could achieve a five-fold increase rail freight volume by adding over 100 new weekly services, significantly reducing CO2 emissions by replacing HGV transport. This is planned to take place through developing intermodal terminals in Dublin and Limerick, reconnecting major ports like Foynes, and investing €500M in modern rolling stock and infrastructure, including enhanced port connections.
Hosted by the CIRO Irish Area Council, join IÉ’s Railfreight Business Development Manager Kasia Steyn and Project Manager David Mercer-Cox as they take us through the workstreams and capital investments underway to bring this to life, some of which are now reaching a tangible state, such as the Foynes branch reconstruction and the new wagon fleet prototypes.
