CIRO Announce Appointment of Philip Sherratt as CEO | Chartered Institution of Railway Operators

The Chartered Institution of Railway Operators (CIRO) is pleased to announce the appointment of Philip Sherratt as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective late October. Philip will succeed Annette Shipley, who has served as Acting CEO and will return to her role as Deputy CEO.

Phil’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the UK rail industry as the sector undergoes significant transformation with the ongoing Great British Railways (GBR) reform, presenting an exciting opportunity for CIRO to evolve with the rail sector and support in its evolution. The Appointment Panel were left in no doubt that Philip was the right candidate to lead CIRO into this next period of growth and evolution for both the Institution, and the rail sector.

Ellie Burrows, Regional Managing Director of Network Rail and Chair of CIRO, commented, “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Philip Sherratt as CIRO’s new Chief Executive Officer. Philip will join CIRO in late October, succeeding Annette Shipley, who has done an excellent job leading CIRO. As Philip joins us, Annette will return to her role as Deputy CEO.

Philip’s appointment follows a rigorous selection process, and he brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in our industry. Many of you may know him as the Editor of Modern Railways. The Appointment Panel is confident Philip is the ideal leader to guide CIRO into its next phase of growth and success. His appointment heralds an exciting new chapter for CIRO, and we anticipate the positive impact he will have on the CIRO team, clients, and stakeholders.”

In accepting this appointment, Philip Sherratt said, “CIRO makes a hugely important contribution to developing the skills of railway people, without whom the railway cannot fulfil its goals of moving passengers and goods and enabling economic prosperity. Building on strong foundations, I feel privileged to be offered the opportunity to lead this fantastic organisation as it embarks on the next stage of its journey. I believe CIRO has a vital role to play in our industry’s future, so my vision is to grow its influence and reach and to place its offering at the centre of a reformed railway.”

Ellie Burrows further added, “I am certain you will share my enthusiasm in welcoming Philip to the CIRO family.”
