As the country celebrates 200 years of railways the CIRO South West and Wales Area Council takes a look at the last 200 years of railways from London Paddington to Penzance and Worcester, taking in Wessex and of course key rail centre Bristol. With photos and maps, Paul Stanford and Robin White from the South West & Wales Area Council look from the 19th century to the present day, including:

  • Consolidation in the Victorian and Edwardian era
  • The Great war and interwar years
  • Postwar Britain and the 1955 modernisation plan
  • The Beeching Era – closure and decline
  • The motorway era – BR mounts a fightback
  • Growth and the 21st century
