CIRO Celebrates 25 Years of Professional Excellence with Jubilee Lunch at Royal Lancaster London

The Chartered Institution of Railway Operators (CIRO) marked a landmark anniversary yesterday with a special Jubilee Lunch at the Royal Lancaster London, celebrating 25 years of advancing professional excellence in railway operations.

Held on 11 June 2025, the event welcomed over 200 guests from across the rail industry, including members, learners, partners, tutors, corporate supporters and senior leaders. The afternoon brought together the CIRO community to recognise the Institution’s achievements and to look ahead to its ambitious plans for the future.

Among the distinguished guests was the Rt Hon Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill CBE, Minister of State for Rail, who delivered a keynote address.

Lord Hendy commented:

“I was honoured to join CIRO to celebrate 25 years of their work promoting the highest standards amongst its membership.
This country is the pioneer of rail travel, and CIRO represents the people who continue this legacy. From my previous roles at Transport for London and Network Rail, to my work now, I know how valuable a good support system is when developing and growing as a rail industry professional.I wish CIRO the best for the next 25 years and beyond – inspiring, educating, and promoting innovation in every generation finding rewarding careers in the rail industry.”

Jim Meade, Chair of the CIRO Board and Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann, offered reflections on the Institution’s journey and industry impact, while CIRO CEO Phil Sherratt spoke of the Institution’s evolving role in supporting a modern, skilled railway workforce.

“CIRO has grown enormously since its beginnings in 2000,” said Phil Sherratt. “This event is not just about the past—it’s about the future. Our mission to lead, inspire and accelerate the growth of rail professionals has never been more vital. I’d like to thank all those who have helped shape CIRO into what it is today.”

The Jubilee Lunch featured a three-course meal, networking opportunities, and reflections from CIRO members and partners. Special thanks were given to CIRO’s corporate members, volunteers, and Area Council representatives, whose continued dedication has helped the Institution thrive.

“This was a celebration of the people behind the railway,” added Jim Meade. “CIRO has given railway operators the tools, recognition and professional community they deserve, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together.”

The Jubilee Lunch forms part of CIRO’s 2025 Jubilee Year programme – a calendar of events and activities aligned with the national Railway 200 campaign. Highlights have already included the renaming of a GB Rail freight Class 66 locomotive as Chartered Institution of Railway Operators in honour of the anniversary. In the coming weeks, CIRO members will also be able to reserve a limited-edition Jubilee boxset of the Operators Handbook, Issue 4 – an exclusive collector’s edition created to commemorate the 25th anniversary. Members are encouraged to check CIRO’s website and communications updates for details and to secure their copy.
