The North East Area Council invites members to visit the Institute of Railway Research at Huddersfield University.
Huddersfield IRR is a world leading centre in the field of railway engineering, whose research has helped to improve the knowledge of the way in which railway vehicles interact with the track, including key performance aspects such as suspension performance, wheel-rail contact, traction and braking. In partnership with industry and academic partners, this work has led to a number of tools and techniques being developed, which are now used to predict deterioration of railway wheels and rails, optimise the vehicle-track interface, increase safety and reliability levels, reduce cost and improve performance of the railway system.
The visit will start with a short presentation about some of the research programmes that the IRR has carried out on behalf of the industry, after which we will be shown round the testing facilities, in particular the £4.5m testing rig and how it works. We will also visit the latest laboratory facilities, and may even get to see the small self-built loco that the students built and entered in competitions across the country.
It is expected that the visit will last around 2 hours, after which light refreshments will be provided at the Head of Steam pub at Huddersfield station.
Places are limited to 15 for this visit. Therefore please register as soon as possible, as places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, and a waiting list will be put in place should the event sell out. Spaces must be booked by Monday 5th September at 08:00. When booking, please let us know whether you have any mobility or dietary requirements. Attendees will meet at 17:00 at Huddersfield Station for a 17:30 start at the University, so please plan accordingly. Further details will be given to those who have been allocated a place. If a delegate subsequently cannot attend, it is essential that they notify the organiser; late advice or failure to notify may reduce eligibility for subsequent events.
Please Note: You must be logged in to book a space. If you are having trouble logging in, please email Fiona at cpd@railwayoperators.co.uk
