Nexus is the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive and administers funds on behalf of the Joint Transport Committee of the North East Combined Authority and the North of Tyne Combined Authority.

Employing a team of approximately 1,000 colleagues, Nexus has a mission of making public transport great for the environment, economy and communities. Its main driver is to improve the quality of life and fortunes of everyone in Tyne and Wear by creating better transport networks.

Nexus is responsible for:

• Metro – The Tyne and Wear Metro is the UK’s busiest light rail system outside London. Built in the 1980s, it carries around 37 million passengers a year and is the backbone of the region’s public transport. The system has 60 stations with trains running up to every three minutes at peak times. Nexus is now delivering a £362m programme to renew and upgrade Metro, with the introduction of a new fleet of 46 trains as well as a state of the art, sustainable depot.

• Bus services – in Tyne and Wear bus services are provided by commercial operators who define and operate approximately 90% of routes. Nexus monitors bus service performance and secures the remaining routes. Nexus also owns and manages many major bus stations.

• Shields Ferry – Nexus runs a cross-Tyne ferry that operates between North Shields and South Shields.

• Concessionary Travel Schemes – residents of Tyne and Wear enjoy several concessionary travel schemes (both statutory and discretionary), administered and funded by Nexus, providing free and reduced-price travel on different modes of transport to those who are eligible.

• Specialist travel services – helping people with restricted mobility and helping people attend and continue education through cheaper travel and by providing specialist services.

• Customer information – providing public transport information via its website, a call centre, electronic displays and printed materials.
