Guest Speaker Dave Bentley

Learning, Development & Participation Manager,
The Railway Children

Thursday 5th September | 12:30

CIRO is delighted to welcome Dave Bentley, Learning, Development & Participation Manager at The Railway Children as our guest speaker.

The Railway Children support vulnerable children alone and at risk on the streets and at transport hubs in the UK, India and Tanzania. They do this in four key ways:

1. Working with families before a child turns to the streets, while they’re on the streets and after The Railway Children have got them to safety.
2. Making transport hubs safe places, hostile to potential abusers. They empower the public to play their part in protecting vulnerable children and young people.
3. Bridging the gaps in social and government systems and leading the change to improve laws, policies and practices needed to better protect vulnerable children.
4. Making sure street-connected children are recognised by policymakers, that their stories are heard and that procedures are put in place to keep them safe.

This session will cover key elements taken from The Railway Children’s safeguarding champions course which is widely accessed by a number of rail staff across the UK. Dave will focus on how key rail staff and the industry play a vital role in disrupting, reporting and supporting vulnerable children and young people who are often at risk and exploited in the UK’s transport system.
