Location: Stafford, with regular meetings throughout the UK and occasional international travel

The Chartered Institution of Railway Operators (CIRO) is the only professional institution whose purpose is to develop and promote the profession of rail operations. By connecting operators with fellow professionals, accessible learning resources and engaging events, CIRO supports our 12,000 members throughout their career.
Our mission is to champion the professional development of those working in railway organisations enabling the whole railway system to succeed.

Your Role:

The CEO role at CIRO is pivotal for providing inspirational leadership and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships to drive company growth. The position requires someone with gravitas who can effectively promote CIRO purpose, vision, ambitions, and values in all its endeavours. The CEO will lead the Senior Leadership Team to ensure the Institution consistently upholds the highest standards of conduct, performance, and accountability. Collaboratively, they will facilitate the effective implementation of strategy business plans, policy decisions, translating them into tangible operational results for the organisation its members and its employees.

Key Responsibilities:

Ignite Strategic Brilliance:
Craft and communicate a compelling strategic direction for CIRO, aligning organisational structure with strategic requirements. Guide the Board on plan achievement, organisational performance, and effective governance. Collaborate with stakeholders, refining initiatives based on industry trends.

Dynamic Leadership and Management:
Be an ambassador for CIRO within the rail sector, enhancing our profile and fostering positive relationships. Strengthen membership value, influence industry trends, and motivate staff towards strategic goals. Establish targets, drive performance, and champion diversity and inclusion.

Pioneer Governance and Integrity:
Develop relationships with the Board, ensuring compliance and managing risk. Oversee HR, GDPR, and Policy Group activities. Fulfil responsibilities as the Awarding Organisation’s Responsible Officer.
Transparent Financial Management:
Develop budgets, provide financial information to the Board, and manage accounts to ensure adequate financing.

Essential Criteria:
Passionate commitment to CIRO’s mission, significant leadership experience, proven strategic planning skills, exemplary leadership, communication, and financial acumen, understanding of education sectors.

Desirable Criteria:
Understanding of the railway sector, familiarity with CIRO’s products, experience with regulatory bodies, and proficiency in marketing.

Authentic, purpose-driven, commercially astute, resilient, emotionally intelligent, and outcome-driven. Visionary, team-oriented, and decisive in handling challenges.
